Adrenaline Child DVD Review

Its crazy how you can talk to someone multiple times for hours about so many aspects of their lives but still not know half of what you thought you did. I’m talking about poet, comedian, and journalist Josh Smith. I recently received his new (and certainly the first of many) DVD titled Adrenaline Child: The Best Of Josh Smith 2006 - 2010. There were quite a few times where I said to myself “He never mentioned that before…” And I have had him on my Rosscast podcast and The Rant Zone where we have spoken on many topics for hours at a time.

I believe that one of the best things someone can do and a testament to their amazing skill is to make me like something I have no interest in or hate. Poetry and specifically spoken word poetry was this thing for me. Josh Smith’s view of the usual suspects being 60 year old White performers with 30 years experience differs from my view of angry Black’s that scream at the audience. This is not Josh Smith. He just sounds like someone that has far more experience than he does and a voice that is what a kick would sound like if it had words.

The Adrenaline Child covers Josh’s transition, and coming together, of his career as a musician (which is very funny), to comedian, to poet, to everything combined. Through interviews, photos, and clips from live performances you are able to watch the evolution of his character on stage and his growth as a person. Mind you, this isn’t some documentary where the person just talks about how amazing they are where there were absolutely no bumps in the road. No, Josh talks about the high and lows and the struggles with just being able to be allowed to speak on stage. This covers about an hour of the content.

There is just over an hour of live performances as well. I have seen live poetry readings before and I can honestly say that I have never seen anyone like him before. Not sure if someone else could do it the way Josh Smith does it either. For anyone that has a dream or a goal this DVD will be very inspirational to them. Watching it made me smile…and not just because my asshole type behavior helped inspire it. I don’t promote or support bad, be they friends or not. This is not bad. Its fucking awesome.
